Photo tips : Feeling photogenic on your wedding day

Let’s bust a myth right now: being “photogenic” isn’t a thing. Yep, you’ve heard that right. This old idea that some folks just naturally look amazing on camera while the rest of us don’t quite make the cut? It’s not really about that. It’s all about how comfortable you are in front of the camera. When that lens faces us, a lot of us just freeze up – we forget how to breathe properly, get all awkward with our hands, and our faces… well, they just don’t cooperate. And that little voice in our heads? It doesn’t help, convincing us we’re doing it all wrong.

Want to know the #1 thing people always include in their inquiry to me?
“We want beautiful photos but are super awkward on camera unlike the couples on your site”

And guess what? Those same “awkward” couples are now in my portfolio!

In my journey as a San Francisco Bay Area wedding photographer, I’ve seen it time and again – the transformation of individuals from being camera-shy to radiating their true, unfiltered selves. My specialty lies not just in capturing stunning visuals but in making people feel completely at ease in front of my camera. It’s about creating an environment where you forget the camera is even there, allowing your genuine self to shine through.

The magic happens when you trust the process and embrace the guidance provided. My expertise in coaxing out that natural, authentic presence ensures that the photos we create together are not just images but reflections of your true essence and connection. Being a part of your special day and witnessing the transformation of individuals revealing their authentic selves in front of the lens is a privilege and the core of my work as a photographer specializing in intimate, authentic wedding photography in the vibrant setting of the San Francisco Bay Area.

So let’s dive into some casual tips to help you look and feel like your most natural self in front of the camera:

  1. Remember to Breathe: Seriously, it’s easy to hold your breath when you’re trying to pose, but that just makes you look tense. Take some deep breaths, relax, and let your expressions come out more naturally.
  2. Laugh A Little: Nothing beats a genuine smile. Think of something hilarious or ask someone to crack a joke. It’ll help those natural smiles to come out, not the forced ones that scream “I’m trying to look happy!”
  3. Move Around: Don’t be afraid to move! Shift your weight from one leg to another, play with your hair, or adjust your outfit. Movement looks more natural than standing stiffly in one spot. No matter what “pose” your photographer puts you in, don’t feel limited to stand there like a doll!
  4. Ignore the Camera: This might sound odd, but try to forget the camera is even there. Chat with your photographer or a friend during the shoot. This helps capture those candid moments where your genuine personality shines.
  5. Practice Makes Perfect: A bit of mirror time can go a long way. Practice your smile, find your best angles, and see how you look when you laugh. Getting to know your own expressions can really boost your confidence!
  6. Be Yourself: Ultimately, the best photos are the ones where you can see the real you. Embrace your quirks, and don’t worry about looking “perfect.” Authenticity is key.

Remember, the goal is to capture the real, awesome you, so the more relaxed and genuine you are, the better the photos will turn out!

Prepare to be amazed as you see yourself in a new light, through photographs that celebrate your genuine connections and authenticity. No one wants stiff, uncomfortable photos on this special day. It’s not about changing who you are for the photo; it’s about letting who you truly are come to the forefront. And helping you do that is one of my greatest strengths as a photographer.
